Celebrity travel: Sue Lawley goes off
the rails on a train ride through
Malaysia and Thailand Before going to bed, we had found on our pillows tiny garlands of sweet-scented jasmine and rosebuds the colour of blood. Next morning, we were offered the chance to lay them on the memorial at the bridge over the River Kwai It's difficult to imagine, in the sunshine of a beautiful day in Thailand, standing on the banks of a peaceful river, that this was the scene during World War II of the terrible cruelty that characterised the building of the Burma railway.
Towering glory: The Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang was one of the highlights of Sue's journey
We had arrived as passengers on the
luxury train, the Eastern and Oriental
Express.
