Napoleon-beating Tyrol landlord celebrated
The Tyrolean inn keeper turned militia captain who
led a military revolt against Napoleon Bonaparte is
being celebrated with an extensive exhibition in
provincial capital Innsbruck.
Andreas Hofer rose to prominence when he attacked
the great French Emperor's army during the War of
the Third Coalition in 1809.
Hofer (22 November 1767 – 20 February 1810) became a
sniper and later a militia captain during the war.
When Tyrol was transferred from Austria to Bavaria
in the Treaty of Pressburg in 1805, Hofer became a
leader of the anti-Bavarian movement.
